The Spirit, the Water, and the Blood Agree

Faith That Overcomes the World

5:1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the One who begot also loves the one begotten of Him.

5:2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and do His commandments.

5:3For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome,

5:4because everything born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

5:5And who is the one who overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The Witness of the Spirit, the Water, and the Blood

5:6This is He who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ—not in water only, but in water and in blood. And the Spirit is the one who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth.

5:7For there are three who bear witness:

5:8the Spirit and the water and the blood, and the three agree as one.

5:9If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater, because this is God’s testimony: He has borne witness concerning His Son.

5:10The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony within himself. The one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony God has borne concerning His Son.

5:11And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

5:12The one who has the Son has life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

That You May Know You Have Eternal Life

5:13I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

5:14And this is the confidence we have toward Him: if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

5:15And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests we have asked of Him.

5:16If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he is to ask, and he will give him life—to those sinning not toward death. There is sin leading to death; I am not saying that he should make a request concerning that.

5:17Every unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

We Know That Everyone Born of God

5:18We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

5:19We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the evil one.

5:20And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the True One. And we are in the True One, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

5:21Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
