The Labourer Is Worthy of His Wages

Older and Younger Members

5:1Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers,

5:2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Widows

5:3Honor widows who are truly widows.

5:4But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to practice godliness toward their own household and to repay their forebears, for this is acceptable before God.

5:5Now the woman who is truly a widow and left alone has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

5:6But the woman who lives in indulgence is dead while living.

5:7And command these things, so that they may be above reproach.

5:8But if someone does not provide for his own, and especially his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

5:9Let a widow be enrolled who is not less than sixty years old, a wife of one husband,

5:10attested for good works: if she brought up children, if she received strangers, if she washed saints’ feet, if she assisted the afflicted, if she followed every good work.

5:11But refuse younger widows, for when they grow wanton against Christ, they want to marry,

5:12incurring judgment because they set aside their first faith.

5:13And at the same time they learn to be idle, going around the houses, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, speaking things they ought not.

5:14Therefore I want younger women to marry, bear children, manage a household, and give the opponent no opportunity for abuse.

5:15For some have already turned aside after Satan.

5:16If any believing woman has widows, let her assist them, and let the Church not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are truly widows.

Elders

5:17Let the elders who lead well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in word and teaching.

5:18For Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox that threshes,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wage.”

5:19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

5:20Reprove those who sin before all, so that the rest also may have fear.

A Charge Without Partiality

5:21I charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the chosen angels that you keep these things without prejudgment, doing nothing from partiality.

5:22Lay hands hastily on no one, nor share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

5:23No longer drink only water, but use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

5:24The sins of some people are evident beforehand, going ahead to judgment, but those of others follow after.

5:25Likewise good works also are evident, and those that are otherwise cannot remain hidden.
