With the Lord a Day Is as a Thousand Years

The Promise of His Coming

3:1Beloved, this is now the second letter I am writing to you. In these letters I stir up your sincere mind by way of reminder,

3:2so that you may remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,

3:3knowing this first: in the last days scoffers will come with scoffing, walking according to their own desires,

3:4and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it was from the beginning of creation.”

3:5For they willingly overlook this: that heavens existed long ago, and earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,

3:6through which the world that then existed was flooded with water and perished.

3:7But the present heavens and earth have been stored up by the same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people.

The Day of the Lord

3:8But do not let this one thing escape you, beloved: with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.

3:9The Lord is not slow concerning the promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing anyone to perish but all to come to repentance.

3:10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will pass away with a rushing roar, and the elements will be dissolved by burning heat, and the earth and the works in it will be found.

3:11Since all these things are being dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy acts of conduct and godliness,

3:12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved by fire and the elements melt in burning heat?

3:13But according to His promise we await new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

Await These Things in Peace

3:14Therefore, beloved, as you await these things, be diligent to be found by Him spotless and blameless, in peace,

3:15and consider the patience of our Lord to be salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him,

3:16as also in all his letters, speaking in them about these things. In them are some things hard to understand, which the unlearned and unstable distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

3:17Therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, guard yourselves so that you are not carried away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own firm position.

3:18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
