Do Not Imitate Evil, but Good

Greeting

1:1The elder, to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.

1:2Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as all goes well with your soul.

1:3For I rejoiced greatly when brothers came and bore witness to your truthfulness, just as you walk in truth.

1:4I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Hospitality to the Brothers

1:5Beloved, you act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers, even though they are strangers,

1:6who have borne witness to your love before the Church. You will do well to send them onward in a manner worthy of God,

1:7for they went out for the sake of the Name, receiving nothing from the Gentiles.

1:8We therefore ought to support such people, so that we may become fellow workers with the truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius

1:9I wrote something to the Church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not welcome us.

1:10Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to the works he is doing, chattering against us with evil words. Not content with these things, he neither welcomes the brothers himself nor allows those who want to do so, and he puts them out of the Church.

1:11Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is from God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

1:12Demetrius has received testimony from everyone and from the truth itself. We also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.

Final Greetings

1:13I had many things to write to you, but I do not wish to write to you with ink and a reed pen.

1:14But I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face.

1:15Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
