The Promise of the Holy Spirit

1:1In my first account, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began both to do and to teach

1:2until the day when, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up.

1:3To them He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, with many proofs, appearing to them over forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

1:4While gathered with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise, “which,” He said, “you heard from Me;

1:5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

1:6So those who had come together asked Him, “Lord, is this the time when You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

1:7He said to them, “It is not yours to know times or seasons that the Father has set by His own authority.

1:8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and as far as the end of the earth.”

1:9After saying these things, He was lifted up as they watched, and a cloud took Him from their sight.

1:10As they were gazing into heaven while He went, look—two men stood beside them in white garments.

1:11They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The Upper Room in Jerusalem

1:12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath’s journey away.

1:13When they entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.

1:14All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.

The Place of Judas

1:15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers and said—the gathering of persons together numbered about a hundred and twenty—

1:16“Men, brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand through David’s mouth concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;

1:17for he was counted among us and received his allotted share in this ministry.”

1:18Now this man acquired a field from the wages of wrongdoing, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all his entrails poured out.

1:19This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Hakeldamach—that is, Field of Blood.

1:20“For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling become deserted, and let there be no one living in it,’ and, ‘Let another take his office of oversight.’

1:21Therefore, of the men who accompanied us throughout the time when the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

1:22beginning with John’s baptism until the day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become with us a witness of His resurrection.”

Matthias Chosen

1:23They put forward two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also named Justus, and Matthias.

1:24They prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know everyone’s heart, show which one of these two You have chosen

1:25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

1:26They cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.
