A Young Man Who Fell from a Window and Was Raised

Macedonia and Greece
20:1After the uproar ceased, Paul summoned the disciples and encouraged them. Taking leave of them, he departed for Macedonia.
20:2He passed through those regions and encouraged them with many words, then came to Greece
20:3and spent three months there. When a plot was made against him by the Jews as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia.
20:4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.
20:5These men arrived and waited for us in Troas.
20:6We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.
Eutychus Raised at Troas
20:7On the first day of the week, when we had gathered to break bread, Paul spoke with them. He intended to leave the next day and prolonged his message until midnight.
20:8There were many lamps in the upper room where we had gathered.
20:9A young man named Eutychus sat in the window and was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul continued speaking at length. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.
20:10Paul went down, fell upon him, embraced him, and said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.”
20:11He went back up, broke the bread and ate, and talked for a long time until dawn. Then he departed.
20:12They brought the boy away alive and were greatly comforted.
From Troas to Miletus
20:13We went ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there, for he had arranged it this way, intending himself to travel on foot.
20:14When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and came to Mitylene.
20:15Sailing from there, the next day we arrived opposite Chios; on the following day we put in at Samos, and on the next we came to Miletus.
20:16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he would not spend time in Asia. He was hurrying, if possible, to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.
Farewell to the Ephesian Elders
20:17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the Church.
20:18When they came to him, he said, “You know how I was with you the whole time, from the first day I set foot in Asia,
20:19serving the Lord with all humility, tears, and trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.
20:20I held back nothing beneficial from declaring it to you and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
20:21bearing solemn witness to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
20:22And now, look, bound in spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will meet me there,
20:23except that in every city the Holy Spirit bears witness to me, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.
20:24But I account my life of no value to myself, so that I may complete my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus: to bear solemn witness to the good news of God’s grace.
20:25And now, look, I know that none of you among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.
20:26Therefore I testify to you this very day that I am clean from the blood of all,
20:27for I did not hold back from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.
Shepherd the Church of God
20:28Pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock, among whom the Holy Spirit has placed you as overseers, to shepherd the Church of God, which He acquired through His own blood.
20:29I know that after my departure fierce wolves will enter among you, not sparing the flock.
20:30Even from among you yourselves men will arise, speaking distorted things to draw the disciples away after themselves.
20:31Therefore stay awake, remembering that for three years, night and day, I never ceased admonishing each one with tears.
20:32And now I entrust you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you the inheritance among all who have been sanctified.
20:33I coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing.
20:34You yourselves know that these hands served my needs and those of the people with me.
20:35In everything I showed you that by working in this way we must support the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
The Parting at Miletus
20:36After saying these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed.
20:37They all wept greatly, fell upon Paul’s neck, and kissed him repeatedly,
20:38grieving most of all over the word he had spoken, that they would no longer see his face. They accompanied him to the ship.
