A Shadow of the Good Things to Come
10:1For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the realities, can never perfect those who approach by the same sacrifices offered continually year by year.
10:2Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, once cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
10:3But in them there is a reminder of sins year by year,
10:4for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
10:5Therefore, coming into the world, He says, “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me.
10:6In whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You took no pleasure.
10:7Then I said, ‘Look, I have come—in the scroll of the book it is written about Me—to do Your will, O God.’”
10:8After saying above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You did not desire or take pleasure in”—which are offered according to law—
10:9He then said, “Look, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.
10:10By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
One Offering for All Time
10:11And every priest stands daily, ministering and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never remove sins.
10:12But this One, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God,
10:13from then on waiting until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet.
10:14For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
10:15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
10:16“This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: putting My laws upon their hearts, I will also inscribe them upon their mind,”
10:17He adds, “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will certainly remember no more.”
10:18Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Boldness to Enter the Holy Places
10:19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence for entry into the holy places in the blood of Jesus,
10:20by the new and living way He inaugurated for us through the curtain—that is, His flesh—
10:21and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
10:22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body washed with pure water.
10:23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for the One who promised is faithful.
10:24And let us consider one another, to stir up love and good works,
10:25not abandoning our own gathering together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
A Warning Against Deliberate Sin
10:26For if we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins remains,
10:27but a fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire about to consume the adversaries.
10:28Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without compassion on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
10:29How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by the one who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, regarded as common the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
10:30For we know the One who said, “Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.”
10:31It is fearful to fall into the hands of the living God.
Remember the Earlier Days
10:32But remember the earlier days, in which, after being enlightened, you endured a great contest of sufferings,
10:33at one time publicly exposed to reproaches and afflictions, at another becoming companions of those treated in this way.
10:34For you sympathized with the prisoners, and you accepted the seizure of your possessions with joy, knowing that you yourselves have a better possession, and a lasting one.
10:35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.
10:36For you need endurance, so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.
10:37“For yet a very little while, the coming One will come and will not delay.
10:38But My righteous one will live by faith; and if he draws back, My soul takes no pleasure in him.”
10:39But we are not of drawing back into destruction, but of faith for the preservation of the soul.
