The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

Greeting

1:1Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,

1:2which He promised beforehand through His prophets in holy Scriptures,

1:3concerning His Son, who came from David’s seed according to the flesh,

1:4who was designated Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

1:5through whom we received grace and apostleship for the obedience of faith among all the nations for His name,

1:6among whom you also are, called by Jesus Christ:

1:7to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called as saints: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome

1:8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in the whole world.

1:9For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you,

1:10always in my prayers asking whether somehow now at last I may be granted a way, by the will of God, to come to you.

1:11For I long to see you, so that I may share with you some spiritual gift for you to be strengthened,

1:12that is, to be encouraged together among you through one another’s faith, both yours and mine.

1:13And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that I often planned to come to you—and was hindered until now—so that I might have some fruit among you also, just as among the other nations.

1:14I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the senseless.

1:15Thus, for my part, I am eager to proclaim the gospel also to you who are in Rome.

The Righteous Will Live by Faith

1:16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

1:17For in it God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written, “But the righteous one will live by faith.”

The Wrath of God Revealed

1:18For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

1:19because what is known of God is manifest among them, for God made it manifest to them.

1:20For His invisible things, both His eternal power and divinity, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, understood through the things made, so that they are without excuse,

1:21because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.

1:22Claiming to be wise, they became foolish,

1:23and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible humanity, and of birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

God Handed Them Over

1:24Therefore God handed them over, in the desires of their hearts, to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them,

1:25who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and revered and worshiped the creation instead of the Creator, who is blessed unto the ages. Amen.

1:26For this reason God handed them over to dishonorable passions; for their females exchanged natural relations for those contrary to nature,

1:27and likewise the males, leaving natural relations with the female, burned in their desire for one another, males with males working what is shameful and receiving in themselves the recompense that was due for their error.

A Debased Mind

1:28And just as they did not see fit to retain God in their knowledge, God handed them over to an unfit mind, to do what is not fitting:

1:29filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; whisperers,

1:30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, proud, boastful, inventors of evils, disobedient to parents,

1:31without understanding, faithless, without natural affection, merciless;

1:32who, knowing God’s righteous decree, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, not only do them, but also approve those who practice them.
