Zeal Without Knowledge
10:1Brothers, my heart’s desire and my petition to God for them are for salvation.
10:2For I bear them witness that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge;
10:3for, not knowing God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.
10:4For Christ is the end of law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
The Word Is Near You
10:5For Moses writes that the person who does the righteousness from the law will live in it.
10:6But the righteousness from faith speaks in this way: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”—that is, to bring Christ down;
10:7or, “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’”—that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.
10:8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith that we proclaim.
10:9Because if you confess Jesus as Lord with your mouth, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10:10for with the heart one believes for righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses for salvation.
10:11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame.”
10:12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, being rich toward all who call upon Him;
10:13for “everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
How, Then, Are They to Call upon Him?
10:14How, then, are they to call upon One in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in One whom they have not heard? And how are they to hear without someone proclaiming?
10:15And how are they to proclaim unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those announcing good things!”
10:16But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who believed our report?”
10:17So faith is from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Israel Has Heard
10:18But I say, did they not hear? Indeed they did: “Their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world.”
10:19But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous by what is not a nation; by a senseless nation I will provoke you to anger.”
10:20And Isaiah speaks boldly and says, “I was found among those who did not seek Me; I became manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”
10:21But concerning Israel He says, “All day long I stretched out My hands toward a disobedient and contradicting people.”
