The Advantage of the Jew

3:1What, then, is the Jew’s advantage, or what is the benefit of circumcision?

3:2Much in every way. First, indeed, because they were entrusted with the oracles of God.

3:3For what if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness?

3:4May it never be! But let God be true, and every human being a liar, just as it is written, “So that You may be justified in Your words, and will prevail when You are judged.”

3:5But if our unrighteousness demonstrates God’s righteousness, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who brings wrath? I speak in human terms.

3:6May it never be! For then how will God judge the world?

3:7But if God’s truth abounded through my falsehood to His glory, why am I still judged as a sinner?

3:8And why not say—as we are slandered and as some claim we say—“Let us do evil things so that good things may come”? Their condemnation is just.

None Is Righteous

3:9What, then? Are we better off? Not at all; for we have already charged both Jews and Greeks with all being under sin,

3:10just as it is written: “There is no righteous one, not even one;

3:11there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.

3:12All turned aside; together they became useless. There is no one who does kindness; there is not even one.

3:13Their throat is an opened tomb; with their tongues they practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips;

3:14their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.

3:15Their feet are swift to pour out blood;

3:16ruin and misery are in their ways,

3:17and the way of peace they did not know.

3:18There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Every Mouth Silenced

3:19And we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped and the whole world may become answerable to God;

3:20because by works of law no flesh will be justified before Him, for through law comes knowledge of sin.

Righteousness Through Faith in Jesus Christ

3:21But now, apart from law, God’s righteousness has been manifested, witnessed by the law and the prophets:

3:22God’s righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe. For there is no distinction,

3:23for all sinned and fall short of God’s glory,

3:24being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

3:25whom God set forth as a propitiation in His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness because of the passing over of sins committed beforehand,

3:26in God’s forbearance, to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so that He may be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.

Boasting Excluded

3:27Where, then, is boasting? It was excluded. Through what kind of law? Of works? No, but through a law of faith.

3:28For we reckon that a person is justified by faith apart from works of law.

3:29Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not also of Gentiles? Yes, also of Gentiles,

3:30since God is one, who will justify the circumcised from faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

3:31Do we then nullify law through faith? May it never be! Rather, we establish law.
