Asa Removes the High Places

14:1He did what was good and right before the Lord his God.

14:2He removed the foreigners’ altars and the high places, shattered the pillars, and cut down the sacred groves.

14:3He told Judah to seek the Lord, their fathers’ God, and carry out the law and commandments.

14:4He removed the altars and idols from all Judah’s cities, and he made peace;

The Cities Built in Peace

14:5walled cities in Judah’s land, for the land was at peace. There was no war with him during those years, because the Lord had given him rest.

14:6He said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls, towers, gates, and bars while we hold the land. For just as we sought the Lord our God, He sought us, gave us rest all around, and prospered us.”

14:7Asa had a force of armed men carrying large shields and spears in Judah’s land, three hundred thousand; and in Benjamin’s land, light-shield bearers and archers, two hundred and fifty thousand. All these were powerful warriors.

Zare the Ethiopian

14:8Zare the Ethiopian came out against them with a force of a thousand thousands and three hundred chariots. He came as far as Marisa.

14:9Asa went out to meet him and arrayed the battle in the ravine north of Marisa.

14:10Asa cried to the Lord his God: “Lord, it is not beyond Your power to save with many or with few. Strengthen us, Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name we have come against this great multitude. Lord our God, let no human being prevail against You.”

14:11The Lord struck the Ethiopians before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.

14:12Asa and his people pursued as far as Gedor. Ethiopians fell so that there was no preservation among them, for they were shattered before the Lord and His force. They plundered much spoil.

14:13They cut down their villages around Gedor, for terror from the Lord had come upon them. They plundered all their cities, for there was abundant spoil for them.

14:14They also cut down tents of possessions—the Amazonians—and took many sheep and camels, then returned to Jerusalem.
