You Judge Not for Man but for the Lord

Jehu Son of Anani Rebukes Jehoshaphat

19:1Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned in peace to his house in Jerusalem.

19:2Jehu son of Anani the prophet went out to meet him and said, “King Jehoshaphat, do you help a sinner or befriend someone hated by the Lord? Because of this, wrath from the Lord has come upon you.

19:3Nevertheless, good things have been found in you, because you removed the sacred groves from the land of Judah and directed your heart to seek the Lord.”

Judges Appointed in the Cities

19:4Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem. He went out again to the people, from Beersabee to the mountain of Ephraim, and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers.

19:5He appointed judges in all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city.

19:6He said to the judges, “Consider what you are doing, because you judge for the Lord, not for a human being, and the matters of judgment are with you.

19:7Now let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Keep watch and act, because with the Lord our God there is no injustice, admiration of a person’s status, or taking of gifts.”

The Court in Jerusalem

19:8In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the priests, Levites, and ancestral rulers of Israel for the Lord’s judgment and to judge those living in Jerusalem.

19:9He commanded them, “This is how you shall act: in the fear of the Lord, in truth, and with a full heart.

19:10For every man—a judgment that comes before you from your brothers living in their cities, between blood and blood, between ordinance and commandment, and statutes and judgments—you shall give them clear instructions. They will not sin against the Lord, and wrath will not be upon you and your brothers. Act in this way, and you will not sin.

19:11Look: Amarias the priest is the leader over you in every matter of the Lord, and Zabdias son of Ismael, the leader for Judah’s house, in every matter of the king. The scribes and the Levites are before you. Be strong and act, and the Lord will be with the good.”
