Manasseh King of Judah
33:1Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.
33:2He did what was evil before the Lord, following all the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had destroyed before the sons of Israel.
33:3He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had pulled down, erected pillars for the Baals, made sacred groves, and bowed down to all the army of heaven and served them.
33:4He built altars in the Lord’s house, concerning which the Lord had said, “My name shall be in Jerusalem forever.”
33:5He built altars for all the army of heaven in the two courtyards of the Lord’s house.
33:6He passed his children through fire in Gai-banai-ennom. He sought omens from utterances, practiced augury and sorcery, and appointed spirit-mediums and enchanters. He multiplied evil before the Lord, provoking Him to anger.
33:7He set the carved object and the cast object, an image he had made, in God’s house, concerning which God had said to David and his son Solomon, “In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will set My name forever.
33:8I will no longer shake Israel’s foot from the land I gave their fathers, if only they take care to do everything I commanded them, according to all the law, ordinances, and judgments through Moses.”
33:9Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray, to do evil beyond all the nations the Lord had removed before the sons of Israel.
Manasseh Carried to Babylon
33:10The Lord spoke against Manasseh and his people, but they did not listen.
33:11The Lord brought against them the commanders of the king of Assyria’s force. They seized Manasseh in bonds, bound him in fetters, and brought him to Babylon.
The Prayer of Manasseh
33:12When he was afflicted, he sought the face of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.
33:13He prayed to Him, and He listened to him. He heard his cry and restored him to Jerusalem, to his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord Himself is God.
33:14After these things he built a wall outside the City of David, from the southwest opposite Gihon in the winter stream, and where people go out through the surrounding gate, and toward Ophla, and raised it very high. He stationed commanders of the force in all Judah’s walled cities.
33:15He removed the foreign gods and the carved object from the Lord’s house, and all the altars he had built on the mountain of the Lord’s house and in Jerusalem and outside the city.
33:16He set the Lord’s altar right and sacrificed an offering of salvation and praise upon it. He told Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel.
33:17Nevertheless the people were still at the high places; nevertheless, the Lord their God.
The Death of Manasseh
33:18The remaining deeds of Manasseh, his prayer to God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel—behold, in the accounts
33:19of his prayer, and how He listened to him, and all his sins and rebellions, and the places where he built the high places and set up sacred groves and carved objects before turning back—behold, they are written in the accounts of the seers.
33:20Manasseh lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in the garden of his house. His son Amon reigned in his place.
Amon King of Judah
33:21Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem.
33:22He did what was evil before the Lord, as his father Manasseh had done. Amon sacrificed to all the idols his father Manasseh had made and served them.
33:23He did not humble himself before the Lord as his father Manasseh had humbled himself, because his son Amon multiplied transgression.
33:24His servants attacked him and struck him in his house.
33:25The people of the land struck down those who had attacked King Amon, and the people of the land made his son Josiah king in his place.
