The Song of David
22:1David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from Saul’s hand,
22:2and said: “Lord, my rock, my fortress, the One who delivers me for my sake!
22:3My God will be my Guard;
in Him I will trust.
My Defender, the horn of my salvation, my Helper, my refuge of salvation—You will save me from injustice.
22:4I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I will be saved from my enemies.
22:5The crushings of death surrounded me;
torrents of lawlessness stunned me.
22:6The birth pangs of death encircled me;
the harsh assaults of death confronted me.
22:7In my distress I will call upon the Lord;
I will cry to my God.
From His temple He will hear my voice;
my cry will be in His ears.
22:8The earth was shaken and quaked;
the foundations of heaven were shaken together and torn apart because the Lord was angry with them.
22:9Smoke rose in His anger;
fire from His mouth will devour.
Coals were kindled from Him.
22:10He bent the heavens and came down, with thick darkness beneath His feet.
22:11He sat upon cherubim and flew;
He appeared upon the wind’s wings.
22:12He made darkness His hiding place around Him;
His tent was darkness of waters.
He made it thick with clouds of air.
22:13From the brightness before Him, coals of fire were kindled.
22:14The Lord thundered from heaven;
the Most High gave His voice,
22:15and sent arrows and scattered them, lightning and threw them into confusion.
22:16The outlets of the sea appeared;
the foundations of the inhabited world were uncovered at the Lord’s rebuke, at the blast of the breath of His anger.
22:17He reached from on high and took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
22:18He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me, for they had grown stronger than I.
22:19They confronted me on the day of my distress, but the Lord became my support,
22:20and brought me into a spacious place;
He rescued me because He delighted in me.
22:21The Lord repaid me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands He repaid me,
22:22for I kept the Lord’s ways and did not act impiously by departing from my God,
22:23for all His judgments were before me, and I did not turn away from His statutes.
22:24I will be blameless toward Him and guard myself beforehand against my lawlessness.
22:25The Lord will repay me according to my righteousness and according to the cleanness of my hands before His eyes.
22:26With the holy You show Yourself holy;
with the complete man You show Yourself complete,
22:27and with the chosen You will be chosen;
with the crooked You show Yourself crooked.
22:28You will save the poor people, and You will bring low the eyes of the haughty.
22:29You are my lamp, Lord;
the Lord will light my darkness for me.
22:30By You I will run lightly armed;
by my God I will pass over a wall.
22:31The Mighty One—His way is blameless.
The Lord’s word is strong, refined by fire;
He is a Defender to all who trust in Him.
22:32Who is mighty apart from the Lord?
Who will be a Creator apart from our God?
22:33The Mighty One strengthens me with power;
He shook my way free, blameless.
22:34He makes my feet like deer’s feet and sets me upon the heights.
22:35He trains my hands for war and broke a bronze bow with my arm.
22:36You gave me the defense of my salvation;
Your heeding made me great,
22:37making room for my steps beneath me, and my legs did not shake.
22:38I will pursue my enemies and wipe them out;
I will not turn back until I finish them.
22:39I will crush them, and they will not rise;
they will fall beneath my feet.
22:40You will strengthen me with power for war;
You will bend my attackers beneath me.
22:41You gave me my enemies’ backs, those who hated me, and You put them to death.
22:42They will cry out, but there is no helper;
they will cry to the Lord, but He did not listen to them.
22:43I ground them like the dust of the earth;
like the mud of the streets I crushed them fine.
22:44You will rescue me from the battle of peoples;
You will preserve me as head of nations.
A people I did not know served me.
22:45Foreigners lied to me;
as soon as their ears heard, they obeyed me.
22:46Foreigners will be cast away and stumble out of their enclosures.
22:47The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Guard!
My God, the Guard of my salvation, will be exalted!
22:48The mighty Lord gives me vengeance and disciplines peoples beneath me,
22:49and brings me out from my enemies.
You will lift me above my attackers;
You will rescue me from the man of wrongs.
22:50Therefore I will acknowledge You among the nations, Lord, and sing praise to Your name,
22:51He grants great deliverances to His king, showing mercy to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
