The Lord Gave Him Victory Wherever He Went

Victories over the Foreigners and Moab
8:1After this, David struck the foreigners and routed them. David took the separated territory from the foreigners’ hand.
8:2David struck Moab and measured them with cords, making them lie on the ground. Two measured lengths were for putting to death, and two measured lengths he kept alive. Moab became David’s servants, bringing gifts.
The Defeat of Hadadezer and Syria
8:3David struck Hadadezer son of Raab, king of Zobah, as he went to establish his control at the River Euphrates.
8:4David captured one thousand of his chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. David disabled all the chariots, but left a hundred chariots from them.
8:5Syria of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, and David struck down twenty-two thousand Syrian men.
8:6David placed a garrison in Syria around Damascus, and Syria became David’s servants, bringing gifts. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.
8:7David took the gold armlets that were on the servants of Hadadezer king of Zobah and brought them to Jerusalem. Shishak king of Egypt took them when he went up to Jerusalem in the days of Rehoboam son of Solomon.
8:8From Masbak, from Hadadezer’s selected cities, King David took a great quantity of bronze. With it Solomon made the bronze sea, the pillars, the basins, and all the vessels.
The Gifts of Toi King of Hamath
8:9Toi king of Hamath heard that David had struck all Hadadezer’s force,
8:10and Toi sent his son Ieddouran to King David to inquire about peace and bless him because he had fought Hadadezer and struck him, for he had been opposed to Hadadezer. In his hands were silver vessels, gold vessels, and bronze vessels.
8:11King David dedicated these to the Lord, with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the cities he had dominated:
8:12from Idumea, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the foreigners, Amalek, and the spoil of Hadadezer son of Raab, king of Zobah.
8:13David made a name for himself. When he returned, he struck eighteen thousand in Idumea at Gaimale.
8:14He placed a garrison in Idumea, throughout all Idumea, and all the Idumeans became the king’s servants. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.
The Officers of David’s Kingdom
8:15David reigned over Israel, and David administered judgment and righteousness for all his people.
8:16Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahia was over the records;
8:17Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Asa was the scribe;
8:18and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was counselor, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were palace officials.
