Eliphaz: Trouble Springs Out of the Ground

To Whom Will You Turn?

5:1“Call, then, to see whether anyone will answer you,
or whether you will see any of the holy angels.

5:2For anger kills a fool,
and jealousy puts one who has gone astray to death.

5:3I have seen fools taking root,
but immediately their way of life was devoured.

5:4May their sons be far from deliverance;
may they be battered at the doors of weaker people, with no one to rescue them.

5:5For the righteous will eat what they gathered,
and they themselves will not be rescued from evils;
may their strength be drained away.

5:6For toil will certainly not come out of the earth,
nor will pain sprout from mountains;

5:7but a human being is born to toil,
and a vulture’s young fly to the heights.

5:8But indeed, I will entreat the Lord;
I will call upon the Lord, the Master of all,

5:9who does great and unsearchable things,
glorious and extraordinary things beyond numbering,

5:10who gives rain upon the earth
and sends water upon the world beneath heaven,

5:11who raises the lowly to a height
and rouses those who have perished,

5:12who changes the counsels of the unscrupulous,
and their hands will certainly do nothing true.

5:13He catches the wise in their understanding
and throws the counsel of the devious into confusion.

5:14By day darkness will meet them;
may they grope at noon as in the night.

5:15May they perish in war,
but may the powerless escape from a ruler’s hand.

5:16May the powerless have hope,
and may an unjust person’s mouth be stopped.

5:17Happy is the person whom the Lord reproved;
do not refuse the Almighty’s admonition.

5:18For He causes pain and restores again;
He struck, and His hands healed.

5:19Six times He will rescue you from distress;
and the seventh time no evil will touch you.

5:20In famine He will rescue you from death,
and in war He will release you from the hand of iron.

5:21He will hide you from the lash of the tongue,
and you will not fear coming evils.

5:22You will laugh at unjust and lawless people;
you will not fear wild beasts,

5:23for wild beasts will be at peace with you.

5:24Then you will know that your house will be at peace,
and the livelihood of your tent will not fail.

5:25You will know that your offspring are many,
and your children will be like all the vegetation of the field.

5:26You will come to the grave like ripe grain harvested at the proper time,
or like a heap on the threshing floor gathered in its season.

5:27Look, we have searched these things out in this way;
these are the things we have heard.
But know for yourself whether you have done anything.”
