The Guarding of the Gates of Jerusalem
7:1When the wall had been built, I set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, singers and Levites were appointed.
7:2I gave orders to my brother Anania and to Anania, ruler of the bira in Jerusalem, for he was a truthful man and feared God more than many,
7:3and I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem shall not be opened until the sun is up. While they are still keeping watch, let the doors be closed and wedged fast. Appoint advance guards from those living in Jerusalem, each at his guard post and each opposite his house.”
The City Broad and Empty
7:4The city was broad and large, but the people in it were few, and no houses had been built.
7:5God put it into my heart, and I assembled the honored men, rulers and people into companies. I found a book of the company who had come up first, and I found written in it:

7:6These are the sons of the country who came up from the captivity of the deportation which Nabouchodonosor king of Babylon had deported. They returned to Jerusalem and Jouda, each to his town,
7:7with Zorobabel and Jesus and Neemias, Azaria, Daemia, Naemani, Mardochaios, Balsan, Maspharath, Esdra, Bagoi, Naoum, Baana, Masphar. Men of the people of Israel:

The Nathinim
7:46The Nathinim: the sons of Sea, the sons of Asipha, the sons of Tabaoth,

7:49the sons of Anan, the sons of Gadel, the sons of Gaar,

7:51the sons of Gezam, the sons of Ozi, the sons of Phese,
7:52the sons of Besi, the sons of Meinom, the sons of Nephosasim,
7:53the sons of Bakbouk, the sons of Achipha, the sons of Arour,
7:54the sons of Basaloth, the sons of Meida, the sons of Adasan,
7:55the sons of Barkous, the sons of Sisara, the sons of Thema,
7:56the sons of Nisia, the sons of Atipha.
The Sons of Salomon’s Slaves
7:57The sons of Salomon’s slaves: the sons of Souti, the sons of Sapharath, the sons of Pherida,
7:58the sons of Jeale, the sons of Dorkon, the sons of Gadel,
7:59the sons of Saphatia, the sons of Etil, the sons of Phacharath, the sons of Sabaim, the sons of Emim.
7:60All the Nathinim and the sons of Salomon’s slaves: three hundred ninety-two.
Those Who Could Not Show Their Fathers’ House
7:61These came up from Thelmeleth, Aresa, Charoub, Eron and Jemer, but they could not declare the houses of their families or their descent, whether they were of Israel:
7:62the sons of Dalaia, the sons of Tobia, the sons of Nekoda: six hundred forty-two.
7:63And from the priests: the sons of Ebia, the sons of Akos, the sons of Berzelli, because he had taken wives from the daughters of Berzelli the Galaadite and was called by their name.
7:64These sought their record of the company, but it was not found, and they were excluded from the priesthood on grounds of descent,
7:65and Athersatha said that they must not eat of the holy of holies until the priest arose to give light.
The Sum of the Whole Assembly
7:66The whole assembly was as one: forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,
7:67apart from their male and female slaves—these were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven—and two hundred forty-five male and female singers.
7:68Horses: seven hundred thirty-six. Mules: two hundred forty-five.
7:69Camels: four hundred thirty-five. Donkeys: six thousand seven hundred twenty.
The Gifts for the Work
7:70Some of the heads of the families gave for the work to Neemia, for the treasury: one thousand gold pieces, fifty bowls and thirty priests’ chothonoth.
7:71Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work twenty thousand in gold and two thousand two hundred silver minas.
7:72The remainder of the people gave twenty thousand in gold, two thousand two hundred silver minas and sixty-seven priests’ chothonoth.
7:73The priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, those from the people, the Nathinim and all Israel settled in their towns. The seventh month arrived—and the sons of Israel were in their towns—
