Abraham’s Descendants
25:1Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
25:2And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
25:3Jokshan begat Sheba, Teman, and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Raguel, Nabdeel, Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
25:4And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Elraga. All these were the sons of Keturah.
25:5Abraham gave all his belongings to Isaac his son.
25:6But to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and he sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the East.
25:7The years of Abraham’s life were one hundred and seventy-five.
25:8Abraham’s strength failed, and he died at a good old age, old and full of days, and was added to his people.
25:9And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the Double Cave, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is opposite Mamre;
25:10the field and the cave which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife.
25:11And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the Well of the Vision.
Ishmael’s Descendants
25:12These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar, Sarah’s slave woman, bore to Abraham.
25:13These are the names of Ishmael’s sons, by the names of their generations: Ishmael’s firstborn Nebaioth, then Kedar, Nabdeel, and Mibsam,
25:14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
25:15Choddad, Teman, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
25:16These are Ishmael’s sons and their names by their tents and dwellings: twelve rulers according to their nations.
25:17Ishmael lived one hundred and thirty-seven years. His strength failed, and he died and was added to his family.
25:18He settled from Havilah to Shur, opposite Egypt as one goes toward the Assyrians. He lived opposite all his brothers.
Generation of Isaac
25:19These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac.
25:20Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian from Mesopotamia and sister of Laban the Syrian, as his wife.
25:21Isaac prayed to the Lord concerning Rebekah his wife, because she was barren. God heard him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
25:22The children leaped within her, and she said, “If this is to happen to me, why is this happening?” She went to inquire of the Lord.
25:23The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will surpass the other, and the greater will serve the lesser.”
25:24And when her days to give birth were fulfilled, behold, twins were in her womb.
25:25The firstborn son came out red, all over like a hairy hide, and he was named Esau.
25:26Afterward his brother came out, his hand grasping Esau’s heel, and he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah bore them.
Esau Sells His Birthright
25:27The boys grew up. Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the countryside, while Jacob was an unfeigned man, dwelling in a house.
25:28And Isaac loved Esau, because his hunting was food for him; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
25:29Jacob cooked a stew, and Esau came in from the field exhausted.
25:30Esau said to Jacob, “Let me taste some of this red stew, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was named Edom.
25:31But Jacob said to him: “Sell me your birthright today.”
25:32And Esau said: “Behold, I am going to die; what good then is this birthright to me?”
25:33And Jacob said to him: “Swear to me today.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
25:34Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, rose, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.
