A Lament over Israel’s Ruler
19:1“And you, take up a lament over Israel’s ruler,
19:2and say: What was your mother? A cub! She came to be among lions; among lions she multiplied her cubs.
19:3One of her cubs sprang away; he became a lion, learned to seize prey, and ate human beings.
19:4Nations heard against him; he was caught in their destruction, and they led him with a muzzle to Egypt’s land.
19:5She saw that he had been driven away from her and that her support had perished; she took another of her cubs and appointed him a lion.
19:6He moved among lions, became a lion, learned to seize prey, and ate human beings.
19:7He fed in his boldness, desolated their cities, and destroyed the land and its fullness by the sound of his roaring.
19:8Nations from the surrounding countries set themselves against him and spread their nets over him; he was caught in their destruction.
19:9They put him in a muzzle and a cage. He came to Babylon’s king, and he brought him into prison, so that his voice would not be heard upon Israel’s mountains.
Your Mother Was Like a Vine
19:10Your mother was like a vine, like a blossom on a pomegranate tree, planted by water; her fruit and her shoot came from abundant water.
19:11She had a rod of strength for a tribe of leaders; it rose in her size among the trunks, and it saw her size among the multitude of her branches.
19:12She was broken off in wrath and thrown to the ground. The scorching wind dried her choice parts; her rod of strength was punished and dried up. Fire consumed her.
19:13Now they have planted her in the wilderness, in a waterless land,
19:14and fire went out from a rod of her choice parts and devoured her, and there was no rod of strength in her. A tribe is for a parable of lament, and it will become a lament.”
