And the Name of the City: The Lord Is There

The Portions of the Tribes
48:1These are the names of the tribes: from the northern beginning, along the side of the descending, dividing way toward the entrance of Hamath, the court of Ainan, the boundary of Damascus toward the north, along the side of Hamath’s court; the eastern parts as far as the sea shall belong to them—Dan, one portion.
48:2From Dan’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Asher, one portion.
48:3From Asher’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Naphtali, one portion.
48:4From Naphtali’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Manasseh, one portion.
48:5From Manasseh’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Ephraim, one portion.
48:6From Ephraim’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Reuben, one portion.
48:7From Reuben’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Judah, one portion.
48:8From Judah’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts, shall be the first portion set apart, twenty-five thousand in breadth, with a length like one of the portions from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts. The holy place shall be in their midst.
48:9The first portion they set apart for the Lord shall be twenty-five thousand long and twenty-five thousand broad.
The Portion for the Priests
48:10From these shall be the first portion of the holy areas for the priests: twenty-five thousand toward the north, a breadth of ten thousand toward the sea, a breadth of ten thousand toward the east, and a length of twenty-five thousand toward the south. The mountain of the holy places shall be in its midst,
48:11for the consecrated priests, the sons of Zadok, who keep the duties of the house and did not stray when the sons of Israel strayed, as the Levites strayed.
48:12They shall have the first portion given from the land’s first portions, most holy, from the Levites’ boundaries.
The Portion for the Levites
48:13The Levites shall have the land adjoining the priests’ boundaries, twenty-five thousand long and ten thousand broad. The whole length shall be twenty-five thousand and the breadth twenty thousand.
48:14None of it shall be sold or measured out, nor shall the land’s first produce be taken away, for it is holy to the Lord.
48:15The five thousand remaining in breadth alongside the twenty-five thousand shall be a forewall for the city, for dwelling and its intervening space. The city shall be in its midst.
The Measurements of the City
48:16These are its measurements: on the north, four thousand five hundred; on the south, four thousand five hundred; on the east, four thousand five hundred; and toward the sea, four thousand five hundred.
48:17The city shall have an intervening space: two hundred fifty toward the north, two hundred fifty toward the south, two hundred fifty toward the east, and two hundred fifty toward the sea.
48:18The remaining length adjoining the first portions of the holy areas shall be ten thousand toward the east and ten thousand toward the sea; these shall be the holy place’s first portions, and its produce shall be bread for the city’s workers.
48:19The city’s workers, from all Israel’s tribes, shall work it.
48:20The entire first portion shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand. You shall set apart its holy portion as a square, from the city’s possession.
48:21The remainder shall belong to the ruler on this side and that side, from the holy first portions and toward the city’s possession, extending twenty-five thousand in length to the eastern boundaries, and toward the sea extending twenty-five thousand to the sea-facing boundaries, adjoining the ruler’s portions. The first portion of the holy areas and the house’s sanctuary shall be in its midst.
48:22From the Levites’ possession and from the city’s possession, it shall be in the midst of the rulers; between Judah’s boundaries and Benjamin’s boundaries it shall belong to the rulers.
48:23As for the remaining tribes, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Benjamin, one portion.
48:24From Benjamin’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Simeon, one portion.
48:25From Simeon’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Issachar, one portion.
48:26From Issachar’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Zebulun, one portion.
48:27From Zebulun’s boundaries, from the eastern parts to the sea-facing parts—Gad, one portion.
48:28From Gad’s boundaries toward the southwest, its boundaries shall run from Thaiman and the water of Marimoth Kades, an inheritance as far as the Great Sea.
48:29This is the land you shall cast lots for among Israel’s tribes, and these are their divisions, says the Lord God.
48:30These are the city’s outlets toward the north: four thousand five hundred by measure.
The Gates of the City
48:31The city’s gates shall bear the names of Israel’s tribes. Three gates shall face north: one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, and one gate of Levi.
48:32Toward the east, four thousand five hundred, with three gates: one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, and one gate of Dan.
48:33Toward the south, four thousand five hundred by measure, with three gates: one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, and one gate of Zebulun.
48:34Toward the sea, four thousand five hundred by measure, with three gates: one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, and one gate of Naphtali.
48:35The circuit shall be eighteen thousand. And the city’s name, from whatever day it comes into being, shall be its name.”
