They Sow the Wind and Reap the Whirlwind

Like an Eagle Against the Lord’s House

8:1Into their bosom like earth, like an eagle against the Lord’s house, because they transgressed My covenant and acted impiously against My law.

8:2They will cry to Me, ‘God, we know You!’

8:3Because Israel turned away good things, they pursued an enemy.

They Reigned, but Not Through Me

8:4They reigned for themselves and not through Me; they ruled and did not make it known to Me. They made their silver and gold into idols for themselves, so that they might be destroyed.

8:5Rub away your calf, Samaria! My anger was provoked against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed

8:6in Israel? A craftsman made it, and it is no god, because your calf was leading people astray, Samaria.

They Sowed Wind-Blasted Things

8:7Because they sowed wind-blasted things, their overthrow will receive them: a sheaf without strength to make flour. Even if it does make flour, foreigners will devour it.

8:8Israel was swallowed up; now he became among the nations like a useless vessel.

8:9Because they went up to the Assyrians; Ephraim flourished by himself, and they loved gifts.

8:10Therefore they will be handed over among the nations. Now I will receive them, and they will pause a little from anointing a king and rulers.

Ephraim Multiplied Altars

8:11Because Ephraim multiplied altars, beloved altars became occasions of sin for him.

8:12I will write down for him a multitude and his ordinances; the beloved altars were reckoned as foreign things.

8:13Because even if they offer a sacrifice and eat meat, the Lord will not accept them. Now He will remember their injustices and punish their sins. They returned to Egypt and will eat unclean things among the Assyrians.

8:14Israel forgot his Maker, and they built sacred precincts; Judah multiplied walled cities. I will send fire into his cities, and it will devour their foundations.
