The Utterance Against Damascus

17:1The utterance against Damascus. Look, Damascus will be removed from the cities and become a ruin,

17:2abandoned for everlasting time, a bed and resting place for flocks, with no one pursuing.

17:3There will no longer be a stronghold for Ephraim to flee to, nor a kingdom in Damascus, and the Syrians’ remainder will perish; for you are no better than Israel’s sons and their glory. Thus says the Lord Sabaoth.

Jacob’s Glory Will Fail

17:4On that day Jacob’s glory will fail, and the fat parts of his glory will be shaken.

17:5It will be as when someone gathers a standing harvest and reaps seed from the ears in his arm, as when someone gathers an ear in a firm ravine,

17:6and a stalk is left in it, or like olive berries, two or three on a lofty top, or four or five left on their branches. Thus says the Lord, Israel’s God.

17:7On that day a person will trust in the One who made him, and his eyes will look toward Israel’s Holy One,

17:8and they will certainly not trust the altars or their hands’ works, which their fingers made, nor look at their trees or abominations.

17:9On that day your cities will be abandoned as the Amorites and Hivites abandoned theirs before Israel’s sons, and they will be deserted,

17:10because you abandoned God your Savior and did not remember the Lord your Helper. Therefore you will plant a faithless planting and faithless seed;

17:11on the day you plant, you will wander. In the morning, if you sow, it will blossom for harvest on whatever day you allot, and like a human father you will allot to your sons.

Woe, the Multitude of Many Nations

17:12Woe, the multitude of many nations! Like a surging sea, so you will be troubled, and the back of many nations will roar like water.

17:13Many nations are like abundant water, like much water violently rushing down. He will drive him away and pursue him far off, like chaff-dust when people winnow before wind, and like wheel-dust carried by a squall.

17:14Toward evening there will be mourning; before morning it will be gone. This is the portion of those who plundered you, an inheritance for those who took possession of you.
