Woe, City Ariel

29:1Woe, city Ariel, against which David fought! Gather produce year after year, for you will eat with Moab.

29:2For I will press Ariel hard, and her strength and wealth will be Mine.

29:3I will surround you like David, cast a palisade around you and set towers around you,

29:4and your words will be humbled into the earth and sink into the earth. Your voice will be like those who speak from the earth, and your voice will weaken toward the ground.

29:5The ungodly’s wealth will be like dust from a wheel, like drifting chaff, and it will be like a moment, immediately,

29:6from the Lord Sabaoth. For there will be a visitation with thunder, earthquake and a great sound, a rushing storm and a consuming flame of fire.

29:7Like someone dreaming in sleep will be the wealth of all nations who marched against Ariel, all who marched against Jerusalem, and all assembled against her and afflicting her.

29:8They will be like people drinking and eating in sleep; when they rise, their dream is futile. As a thirsty person dreams of drinking but wakes still thirsty, his soul having hoped in vain, so will be the wealth of all nations who marched against Mount Zion.

Grow Faint and Lose Your Senses

29:9Grow faint, lose your senses and suffer a hangover, neither from sikera nor from wine,

29:10because the Lord has made you drink a spirit of stupor, and He will close their eyes and those of their prophets and rulers, those who see hidden things.

29:11All these sayings will be for you like the words of this sealed book. If they give it to a person who knows letters, saying, “Read these,” he will say, “I cannot read, for it is sealed.”

29:12This book will be given into the hands of a person who does not know letters. Someone will say to him, “Read this,” and he will say, “I do not know letters.”

This People Draws Near Me with Their Lips

29:13The Lord said, “This people draws near Me; with their lips they honor Me, but their heart is far from Me. They revere Me in vain, teaching human commands and teachings.

29:14Therefore, look, I will proceed to remove this people; I will remove them, destroy the wise people’s wisdom and hide the discerning people’s understanding.”

Woe to Those Making Deep Counsel

29:15Woe to those making deep counsel, but not through the Lord! Woe to those making counsel in secret! Their deeds will be in darkness, and they will say, “Who has seen us, and who will know us or what we do?”

29:16Will you not be reckoned as the potter’s clay? Will the formed thing say to its former, “You did not form me,” or the work to its maker, “You did not make me intelligently”?

Lebanon Will Be Turned

29:17Is it not yet a little while until Lebanon is changed like Mount Chermel, and Mount Chermel is reckoned as forest?

29:18On that day the deaf will hear a book’s words, and the blind people’s eyes in darkness and mist will see.

29:19The poor will exult with joy because of the Lord, and the hopeless among people will be filled with gladness.

29:20The lawless one has failed, the arrogant one has perished, and those acting lawlessly for evil have been destroyed,

29:21and those who cause people to sin by a word. They will make all who reprove at the gates a stumbling block, and have turned the righteous aside through injustices.

Concerning Jacob’s House

29:22Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jacob’s house, which He set apart from Abraham: “Jacob will not now be ashamed, nor will Israel now change his face;

29:23but when their children see My works, because of Me they will sanctify My name, sanctify Jacob’s Holy One and fear Israel’s God.

29:24Those wandering in spirit will know understanding; grumblers will learn obedience, and stammering tongues will learn to speak peace.”
