What Is Your Mother’s Document of Divorce?

50:1Thus says the Lord: “What is your mother’s divorce document with which I sent her away? Or to which debtor have I sold you? Look, you were sold because of your sins, and I sent your mother away because of your lawless acts.

50:2Why did I come when no person was there, call when no one obeyed? Is My hand not strong enough to rescue? Am I not able to deliver? Look, by My threat I will make the sea desolate and turn rivers to deserts; their fish will dry up for lack of water and die in thirst.

50:3I will clothe heaven in darkness and make its covering like sackcloth.”

50:4The Lord gives me a tongue of instruction, to know the right time when a word must be spoken. He appointed morning for me; He added an ear for me to hear,

The Lord’s Instruction Opens My Ears

50:5and the Lord’s instruction opens my ears. I do not disobey or contradict.

50:6I have given my back to scourges and my cheeks to slaps. I did not turn my face away from the shame of spitting.

50:7The Lord became my helper; therefore I was not abashed. Instead, I set my face like solid rock and knew that I would certainly not be ashamed.

50:8For the One who justified me draws near. Who is litigating with me? Let him stand against me together. Who is litigating with me? Let him approach me.

Trust in the Name of the Lord

50:9Look, the Lord helps me. Who will harm me? Look, all you will grow old like a garment, and it will devour you like a moth.

50:10Who among you fears the Lord? Let him listen to His servant’s voice. Those walking in darkness have no light; trust in the Lord’s name and lean upon God.

You Who Burn Fire and Strengthen a Flame

50:11Look, all you burn fire and strengthen a flame. Walk by your fire’s light and the flame you kindled. These things came to you because of Me; you will fall asleep in sorrow.
