Chapter 32

Righteous rule and the poured-out spirit

Verse 32:1 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:1 Look, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:1 For look, a righteous king will reign, and rulers will rule with judgment.

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: The righteous king and just rulers correspond. Greek makes righteous an adjective of the king rather than the manner of his reign.

Verse 32:2 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:2 A man will be like a shelter from wind and a refuge from storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like a heavy rock's shade in a weary land.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:2 The man will conceal his words and hide as from rushing water; he will appear in Zion like a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew a man protects from wind and storm and refreshes like streams and rock-shade; Greek he hides words and himself, then appears in named Zion as a glorious river. Greek lacks the wind and rock images and introduces concealment by the man.

Verse 32:3 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:3 The eyes of those seeing will not be shut, and the ears of those hearing will attend.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:3 They will no longer trust in human beings, but will give their ears to listen.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew unimpaired seeing becomes Greek cessation of trust in people. Attentive hearing agrees, with Greek an active giving of ears.

Verse 32:4 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:4 The hasty heart will understand knowledge, and stammerers' tongues will hasten to speak clearly.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:4 The weak people's heart will attend to listening, and stammering tongues will quickly learn to speak peace.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew rashness becomes Greek weakness, understanding becomes listening, and clear speech becomes peaceful speech. Both promise swift change to stammering tongues.

Verse 32:5 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:5 The fool will no longer be called noble, nor the rogue said to be generous.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:5 They will no longer tell the fool to rule, and your attendants will no longer say, “Be silent.”

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew false honor given to fool and rogue becomes Greek the fool's disqualification from rule and attendants' cessation of silencing. Greek has no rogue or generous designation.

Verse 32:6 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:6 For the fool speaks folly, and his heart works wrongdoing, practicing godlessness and speaking error against YHWH, emptying the hungry person's appetite and withholding the thirsty person's drink.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:6 For the fool will speak foolish things, and his heart will think futile things, carrying out lawless acts and speaking deception toward the Lord, scattering hungry souls and making thirsty souls empty.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: The fool's speech, evil intent and harm to the needy agree. Hebrew hungry emptiness and withheld drink become Greek hungry people scattered and thirsty people emptied; Greek thoughts of futility replace the heart's working evil.

Verse 32:7 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:7 The rogue's tools are evil; he devises schemes to ruin the humble with lying words, even when the needy person speaks justly.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:7 For evil people's counsel will devise lawless things, to destroy the lowly with unjust words and scatter the lowly people's words in judgment.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew the rogue's evil tools become Greek evil counsel. Both harm the lowly through wrongful words, but Hebrew the needy person's rightful claim becomes Greek destruction of their words in court.

Verse 32:8 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:8 The noble person plans noble things, and by noble things he stands.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:8 The devout planned understanding things, and this counsel will remain.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew nobility or generosity becomes Greek piety and understanding. Hebrew the person stands; Greek the counsel remains, with past planning rather than a habitual statement.

Verse 32:9 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:9 Women at ease, rise and hear my voice! Confident daughters, give ear to my speech!

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:9 Wealthy women, rise and hear my voice! Daughters in hope, hear my words!

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew ease becomes Greek wealth, and confidence becomes hope. The two calls for women to listen agree.

Verse 32:10 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:10 Days beyond a year, you confident women will tremble, for the vintage ends and the ingathering does not come.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:10 Remember the days of a year in pain with hope; the vintage has been exhausted, the sowing has ceased and will certainly no longer come.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew a time until trembling becomes Greek a command to remember a year's days in pain and hope. The failed vintage agrees, but ingathering becomes sowing, and Greek intensifies its nonarrival. The Hebrew duration is approximate, not a dated prediction.

Verse 32:11 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:11 Tremble, women at ease; shake, confident ones! Strip, make yourselves bare and gird your waists.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:11 Be dismayed, grieve, you confident women; undress, become naked and gird sackcloth around your waists,

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The alarm and stripping commands agree. Greek explicitly supplies sackcloth, which Hebrew leaves unexpressed, and has grief rather than trembling in the second command.

Verse 32:12 Same

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:12 Beat the breasts in lament over the desirable fields, over the fruitful vine,

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:12 and beat your breasts because of the desirable field and fruitful vine.

Classification & Notes

Same. Text: The mourning gesture and lost fields and vines correspond. Hebrew plural fields becomes Greek one field; Greek continues the preceding commands explicitly.

Verse 32:13 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:13 over My people's ground, where thorn and brier rise, indeed over all the houses of joy, the exultant city.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:13 My people's earth will grow thorn and grass, and joy will be removed from every house. Wealthy city,

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew thorn and brier spreading even over joyful houses becomes Greek thorn and grass plus joy explicitly removed. Hebrew exultant city becomes wealthy city, carried as an address or loose phrase into fourteen.

Verse 32:14 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:14 For the palace is forsaken, the city's throng abandoned; mound and watchtower become caves forever, wild donkeys' delight, pasture for flocks,

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:14 houses abandoned! They will leave the city's wealth and desirable houses; villages will become caves forever, wild donkeys' delight, pastures for shepherds,

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew palace, city population, mound and watchtower become Greek abandoned houses, forsaken wealth and villages. Wild donkeys and grazing agree, but flocks becomes shepherds. Greek the opening houses phrase is syntactically difficult; its following plural agents remain unnamed.

Verse 32:15 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:15 until a spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field and the fruitful field is reckoned as forest.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:15 until a spirit from on high comes upon you. Chermel will become wilderness, and Chermel will be reckoned as forest.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew poured spirit upon us becomes Greek arriving spirit upon you. Hebrew wilderness becomes fruitful field; Greek's articular Chermel is taken as subject, becoming wilderness, before being reckoned as forest. This difficult Greek direction of transformation is preserved, not automatically reversed to match Hebrew.

Verse 32:16 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:16 Justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:16 Judgment will rest in the wilderness, and righteousness will dwell in Carmel.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Justice and righteousness inhabit the two locations in both. Hebrew fruitful field becomes the Greek place-name Carmel, here spelled differently from Chermel in fifteen.

Verse 32:17 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:17 Righteousness's work will be peace, and righteousness's service quietness and confidence forever.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:17 Righteousness's works will be peace; righteousness will secure rest, and they will be confident forever.

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: Righteousness brings lasting peace, rest and confidence in both. Greek makes righteousness actively secure rest and ends with an implied plural confident people; Hebrew has a coordinated result of service.

Verse 32:18 Different

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:18 My people will dwell in a peaceful pasture, in secure dwellings and undisturbed resting places.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:18 His people will dwell in a city of peace and live confidently, and they will rest with wealth.

Classification & Notes

Different. Text: Hebrew My people becomes Greek His people; pasture and dwellings become one city. Greek adds wealth to their rest, while Hebrew emphasizes undisturbed places.

Verse 32:19 Disparate

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:19 Hail will fall as the forest comes down, and the city will be laid utterly low.

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:19 If hail comes down, it will not come upon you. Those dwelling in the forests will be confident like those in the plain.

Classification & Notes

Disparate. Text: Hebrew falling forest and humiliated city become Greek exemption from hail and equal security for forest and plain residents. The Greek protection clauses have no Hebrew counterpart, and Hebrew city abasement is absent from Greek.

Verse 32:20 Similar

Hebrew–English: Literal-Smooth (Rabbinic Priority)

32:20 Blessed are you who sow beside all waters, sending out the feet of ox and donkey!

Greek–English: Literal-Smooth (Saints Priority)

32:20 Blessed are those sowing beside every water, where ox and donkey tread!

Classification & Notes

Similar. Text: The blessing, well-watered sowing and working animals agree. Hebrew directly blesses those sending the animals; Greek describes the location where they tread.
