A Jar Broken That Cannot Be Mended

The Potter’s Vessel
19:1Then the Lord said to me: Go and acquire a molded earthenware jar, and bring some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests.
19:2And go out to the burial ground of the sons of their children, which is before the Charsith Gate, and read there all the words that I speak to you.
Hear the Lord’s Word, Kings of Judah
19:3And say to them: Hear the Lord’s word, kings of Judah, men of Judah, inhabitants of Jerusalem, and those entering these gates. Thus says the Lord, Israel’s God: Look, I am bringing evils upon this place, so that both ears of everyone hearing them will ring.
19:4Because they abandoned Me and alienated this place, burning incense in it to foreign gods whom neither they nor their fathers knew; and Judah’s kings filled this place with innocent blood,
19:5and built high places for Baal to burn their sons in fire, things I did not command or speak of or conceive in My heart.
19:6Therefore look, days are coming, says the Lord, and this place will no longer be called Collapse or the Burial Ground of the Son of Hinnom, but the Burial Ground of Slaughter.
19:7And I will slaughter Judah’s counsel and Jerusalem’s counsel in this place, and cast them down by the sword before their enemies and into the hands of those seeking their lives. I will give their dead as food to the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth.
19:8And I will make this city a disappearance and a hissing. Everyone passing through it will look gloomy and hiss over its whole wound.
19:9And they will eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and each will eat his neighbor’s flesh in the encirclement and siege with which their enemies will besiege them.
19:10And smash the jar before the eyes of the men going out with you,
Thus I Will Shatter This People
19:11and say: Thus says the Lord: This is how I will smash this people and this city, as an earthenware vessel is smashed that cannot be healed again.
19:12This is what I will do, says the Lord, to this place and its inhabitants, so that this city is made like the collapsing place.
19:13And Jerusalem’s houses and the houses of Judah’s kings will be like the collapsing place of uncleannesses, in all the houses where they burned incense upon their roofs to all the host of the heavens and poured drink offerings to foreign gods.
19:14And Jeremiah came from Collapse, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, stood in the courtyard of the Lord’s house, and said to all the people:
I Am Bringing upon This City
19:15Thus says the Lord: Look, I am bringing upon this city, all its towns, and its villages all the evils I spoke against it, because they hardened their necks so as not to listen to My words.
