The Two Baskets of Figs

24:1The Lord showed me two baskets of figs lying before the Lord’s sanctuary, after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, the rulers, craftsmen, prisoners, and rich people from Jerusalem and brought them to Babylon.

24:2One basket had very good figs, like early figs; the other basket had very bad figs that could not be eaten because of their badness.

24:3And the Lord said to me: What do you see, Jeremiah? I said: Figs. The good are exceedingly good, and the bad exceedingly bad; they cannot be eaten because of their badness.

24:4And the Lord’s word came to me, saying:

Like These Good Figs

24:5Thus says the Lord, Israel’s God: Like these good figs, so I will acknowledge Judah’s deportees, whom I have sent from this place to the Chaldeans’ land, for good things.

24:6And I will fix My eyes upon them for good things and restore them to this land for good things. I will rebuild them and certainly not tear them down, plant them and certainly not pluck them out.

24:7And I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord. They will be My people and I will be their God, because they will return to Me from their whole heart.

24:8And like the bad figs that cannot be eaten because of their badness—thus says the Lord—so I will hand over Zedekiah king of Judah, his nobles, Jerusalem’s remnant left in this land, and those dwelling in Egypt.

I Will Give Them to Scattering

24:9And I will give them to scattering into all the earth’s kingdoms, and they will become a reproach, a parable, an object of hatred, and a curse in every place where I drove them out.

24:10And I will send famine, death, and sword against them until they disappear from the land I gave them.
