The Second Word to Jeremiah

40:1The Lord’s word came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still bound in the prison court:

40:2Thus said the Lord, who makes the earth and forms it to set it upright—the Lord is His name:

40:3Cry out to Me and I will answer you. I will announce to you great, mighty things you have not known.

40:4For thus said the Lord, Israel’s God, about this city’s houses and the houses of Judah’s king, torn down for siegeworks and defenses,

40:5to fight the Chaldeans and fill the city with the dead bodies of people I struck in My anger and wrath. I turned My face from them because of all their wicked deeds.

40:6I am bringing her the closing of wounds and a remedy. I will reveal to them that I listen, heal her, and make peace and faithfulness for them.

Judah and Israel Restored and Cleansed

40:7I will bring back Judah’s exiles and Israel’s exiles and build them as before.

40:8I will cleanse them from all the injustices by which they sinned against Me. I will certainly not remember the sins they committed against Me when they departed from Me.

40:9It will be for joy, praise, and greatness to all the people of the earth. They will hear all the good things I will do, and they will fear and be distressed over all the good and peace I will bring them.

40:10Thus said the Lord: Again in this place, which you call deserted of people and animals, in Judah’s cities and outside Jerusalem, desolate because there are no people or animals, there will be heard

The Voices of Joy Return

40:11the sound of joy and rejoicing, the bridegroom’s voice and the bride’s voice, the voices of those saying, Give thanks to the Lord Almighty, for the Lord is good; His mercy is forever. They will bring gifts into the Lord’s house, for I will bring back all the exiles of that land as before, said the Lord.

40:12Thus said the Lord of forces: Again in this place, deserted because there are no people or animals, and in all its cities, there will be lodgings for shepherds settling sheep down.

40:13In the hill-country cities, the cities of the Shephelah, the cities of the Negeb, in Benjamin’s land, in the places around Jerusalem, and in Judah’s cities, sheep will again pass under the hand of the one counting, said the Lord.
