Jonah in the Sea Creature’s Belly

2:1The Lord commanded a great sea creature to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the sea creature’s belly three days and three nights.

2:2Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the sea creature’s belly,

The Prayer of Jonah

2:3and said: “In my affliction I cried to the Lord my God, and He listened to me. From the belly of Hades You heard the voice of my cry.

2:4You cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and rivers encircled me. All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.

2:5I said, ‘I have been thrust away from Your eyes. Shall I again look toward Your holy sanctuary?’

2:6Water poured around me up to my life; the uttermost abyss encircled me; my head sank into clefts of mountains.

2:7I descended into a land whose bars are everlasting restraints; and let the ruin of my life rise up, Lord my God.

2:8As my life was failing me, I remembered the Lord; may my prayer come to You, into Your holy sanctuary.

2:9Those who guard vain and false things abandoned their mercy.

2:10But I, with a voice of praise and acknowledgment, will sacrifice to You. Whatever I vowed I will repay to You, for deliverance to the Lord!”

2:11The sea creature was commanded, and it cast Jonah out onto dry land.
