What Does the Lord Require but to Do Justice?

Rise, Enter into Judgment

6:1Hear now the word of the Lord. The Lord said: “Rise, enter into judgment before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.”

6:2Hear, hills, the Lord’s judgment, and you ravines, foundations of the earth! For the Lord has a case against His people, and He will argue it with Israel.

6:3“My people, what have I done to you? How have I grieved you, or how have I troubled you? Answer Me!

6:4For I brought you up from Egypt’s land and redeemed you from the house of slavery. I sent Moses, Aaron and Miriam before you.

6:5My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned against you and what Balaam son of Beor answered him, from the rushes to Galgal, so that the Lord’s righteousness may be known.”

With What Shall I Take Hold of the Lord?

6:6With what shall I take hold of the Lord and grasp my God Most High? Shall I take hold of Him with whole burnt offerings, with year-old calves?

6:7Will the Lord receive with thousands of rams or with ten thousands of fat-rich torrents? Shall I give my firstborn offspring for impieties, the fruit of my body for the sin of my life?

6:8Has it been announced to you, human being, what is good? Or what does the Lord seek from you except to do justice, love mercy and be ready to walk with the Lord your God?

The Lord’s Voice Called to the City

6:9The Lord’s voice will be called to the city, and He will save those who fear His name. “Hear, tribe! And who will adorn a city?

6:10Is there not fire, and a lawless person’s house storing lawless treasures, and injustice with insolence?

6:11Will a lawless person be justified with a balance and deceptive weights in a pouch?

6:12From these they filled their wealth with impiety; those inhabiting her spoke falsehoods, and their tongue was exalted in their mouth.

6:13And I will begin to strike you; I will obliterate you because of your sins.

6:14You will eat but certainly not be filled. It will grow dark within you and turn aside, and you will certainly not be saved; whoever is saved will be handed over to the sword.

6:15You will sow but certainly not reap; you will press olives but certainly not anoint yourself with oil, and press wine but certainly not drink it. The ordinances of My people will be obliterated.

6:16You kept the ordinances of Zambri and all the works of Achaab’s house, and you walked in their counsels, so that I may hand you over to obliteration and her inhabitants to hissing. You will receive the reproaches of peoples.”
