Your Sorrow Will Turn Into Joy

Persecution Foretold
16:1“These things I have spoken to you so that you may not stumble.
16:2They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, an hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God.
16:3And they will do these things because they have known neither the Father nor Me.
16:4But these things I have spoken to you so that, when their hour comes, you may remember them, that I told you. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
The Work of the Advocate
16:5But now I am going to the One who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
16:6But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
16:7Yet I tell you the truth: it benefits you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate certainly will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
16:8And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and concerning righteousness and concerning judgment:
16:9concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
16:10concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you no longer behold Me;
16:11and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
The Spirit of Truth
16:12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
16:13But when He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you in all the truth; for He will not speak from Himself, but will speak whatever He hears, and will announce to you the things to come.
16:14He will glorify Me, because He will receive from what is Mine and announce it to you.
16:15Everything that the Father has is Mine. For this reason I said that He receives from what is Mine and will announce it to you.
A Little While, and You No Longer See Me
16:16“A little while, and you no longer behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me.”
16:17Then some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He says to us: ‘A little while, and you do not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me,’ and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
16:18So they were saying, “What is this ‘little while’ that He speaks of? We do not know what He is saying.”
16:19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and said to them, “Are you seeking an answer among yourselves about this, because I said, ‘A little while, and you do not behold Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’?
16:20Amen, amen, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will become joy.
16:21When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come; but when she has borne the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.
16:22So you too now have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one takes your joy away from you.
16:23And on that day you will ask Me nothing. Amen, amen, I say to you: if you ask the Father anything, He will give it to you in My name.
16:24Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.
I Have Spoken in Figures of Speech
16:25“These things I have spoken to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
16:26On that day you will ask in My name; and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father concerning you,
16:27for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from God.
16:28I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
See, Now You Are Speaking Plainly
16:29His disciples say, “See, now You speak plainly and use no figure of speech.
16:30Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”
16:31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
16:32Behold, an hour is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
16:33These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction; but take courage: I have overcome the world.”
