The Sending of the Seventy-Two
10:1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.
10:2He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore petition the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into His harvest.
10:3Go; behold, I send you as lambs among wolves.
10:4Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the road.
10:5Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
10:6If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; otherwise it will return to you.
10:7Remain in that same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not move from house to house.
10:8Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you.
10:9Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘God’s kingdom has drawn near to you.’
10:10But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,
10:11‘Even the dust from your city that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this: God’s kingdom has drawn near.’
10:12I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that city.
Woes upon the Unrepentant Cities
10:13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds performed among you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
10:14Nevertheless, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
10:15And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted as far as heaven? You will be brought down as far as Hades.
10:16The one who hears you hears Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
The Return of the Seventy-Two
10:17The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
10:18He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.
10:19Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon snakes and scorpions, and over all the enemy’s power, and nothing will ever harm you.
10:20Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in the heavens.”
Jesus Rejoices in the Spirit
10:21At that very hour He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I acknowledge You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You hid these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because so it was Your good pleasure.
10:22Everything has been handed over to Me by My Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.”
10:23Turning privately to the disciples, He said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
10:24For I tell you that many prophets and kings wished to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
The Good Samaritan
10:25And behold, an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
10:26He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”
10:27He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole strength and with your whole mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
10:28He said to him, “You answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”
10:29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
A Certain Man Was Going Down to Jericho
10:30Jesus replied, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers. They stripped him, inflicted blows, and went away, leaving him half dead.
10:31By coincidence a certain priest was going down that road. He saw him and passed by on the opposite side.
10:32Likewise a Levite also came to the place, saw him, and passed by on the opposite side.
10:33But a certain Samaritan, traveling, came upon him. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion.
10:34He approached and bound his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He placed him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and cared for him.
10:35On the next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Care for him, and whatever more you spend I will repay you when I return.’
10:36Which of these three seems to you to have become a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”
10:37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.”
Martha and Mary
10:38As they traveled, He entered a certain village. A woman named Martha welcomed Him.
10:39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His word.
10:40But Martha was distracted by much serving. She came up and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her, then, to help me.”
10:41The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
10:42but few things are needed, or one. For Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken from her.”
