The Temptation in the Wilderness
4:1Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.
4:2After fasting forty days and forty nights, He became hungry.
4:3The tempter came and said to Him, “If You are God’s Son, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
4:4But He answered, “It is written: ‘A human being shall not live on bread alone, but on every word proceeding through the mouth of God.’”
4:5Then the devil took Him into the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
4:6and said to Him, “If You are God’s Son, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You,’ and ‘They will lift You on their hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
4:7Jesus said to him, “Again it is written: ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
4:8Again the devil took Him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
4:9He said to Him, “I will give You all these things if You fall down and worship me.”
4:10Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.’”
4:11Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
Jesus Withdraws to Galilee
4:12When He heard that John had been handed over, He withdrew to Galilee.
4:13Leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum beside the sea, in the territories of Zebulun and Naphtali,
4:14so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled:
4:15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:
4:16the people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and for those sitting in the region and shadow of death a light rose.”
Repent, for the Kingdom Has Drawn Near
4:17From then on Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.”
The Calling of the First Disciples
4:18As He walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
4:19He said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of people.”
4:20Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
4:21Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them.
4:22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.
Teaching and Healing in Galilee
4:23He went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.
4:24The report about Him spread throughout Syria, and they brought Him all who were ill, afflicted with various diseases and torments, those oppressed by demons, those suffering seizures, and paralytics; and He healed them.
4:25Great crowds followed Him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
