After they withdrew, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Rise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is about to seek the Child to destroy Him.” He rose, took the Child and His mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt. He remained there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” Then Herod, seeing that the magi had outwitted him, became exceedingly angry. He sent men and killed all the boys in Bethlehem and throughout its district who were two years old and under, according to the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great lamentation: Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted, because they are no more.”
After Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Rise, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the Child’s life have died.” He rose, took the Child and His mother, and entered the land of Israel. But hearing that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he feared to go there. Warned in a dream, he withdrew to the regions of Galilee.
Having completed everything according to the Lord’s law, they returned to Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth. Joseph settled there, so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled: “He will be called a Nazarene.” The Child grew and became strong, being filled with wisdom, and God’s grace was upon Him.
