While Peter was below in the courtyard warming himself, a servant girl of the high priest, the woman keeping the door, looked intently at him in the firelight. She said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean, Jesus the Nazarene. Are you not also one of this Man’s disciples?” He denied it before everyone: “I am not. Woman, I do not know Him. I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” He went out into the forecourt, and a rooster crowed.
At the gateway the servant girl again said to those nearby that he was one of them, and another girl saw him and said, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.” Someone else said, “You too are one of them.” Those by the fire asked, “Are you not also one of His disciples?” Again Peter denied it with an oath: “Man, I am not. I do not know the Man.”
After about an hour, those standing nearby insisted, “Truly you are one of them. You are a Galilean, and your speech makes you recognizable.” One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of Malchus whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” Peter began invoking curses and swearing, “I do not know this Man you are speaking of. I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he still spoke, a rooster crowed a second time. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” He went outside, broke down, and wept bitterly.
