Barabbas or Jesus Called Christ

At the feast the governor customarily released one prisoner requested by the crowd. A notorious prisoner called Jesus Barabbas, a bandit, was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder in an uprising in the city. The crowd came to ask Pilate to do as usual. Knowing that the chief priests had handed Jesus over out of envy, he asked, “Whom do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ, the King of the Jews?”

While he sat on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man, for I suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”

The chief priests and elders stirred up the crowd and persuaded them to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They cried together, “Take this man away! Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Pilate wanted to release Jesus and spoke again: “What then shall I do with Jesus called Christ, the One you call King of the Jews?” They shouted, “Crucify Him!” For the third time he asked, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no ground for death in Him. I will punish Him and release Him.” But they pressed him with loud voices, crying all the more, “Crucify Him!” Their voices prevailed.
