Evening had come on the day of Preparation, the day before the Sabbath, and the Sabbath was beginning. Joseph of Arimathea, a city of the Jews, came forward. He was rich, a respected member of the council, a good and righteous man who had not consented to their decision and action, and he awaited God’s kingdom. He had become Jesus’ disciple, though secretly for fear of the Jews. Now he dared to enter before Pilate and ask for Jesus’ body.
Pilate marveled that Jesus was already dead. Calling the centurion, he asked whether He had died some time before. When he learned from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph. Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, and took away His body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litrai. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in clean linen cloths with the spices, as is the Jews’ custom for burial.
At the place of crucifixion there was a garden, and in it Joseph’s own new tomb, cut in the rock, where no one had yet been laid. Because it was Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Joseph rolled a great stone against its entrance and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, the mother of Joses, sat opposite the tomb. The women who had come from Galilee followed, saw where and how His body was laid, and returned to prepare spices and perfumed ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
