So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus says to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He says to Him, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” He says to him, “Feed My lambs.” He says to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He says to Him, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” He says to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” He says to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus says to him, “Feed My sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you: when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” Now He said this to indicate by what kind of death he would glorify God. And having said this, He says to him, “Follow Me.”

Turning, Peter sees the disciple whom Jesus loved following, the one who also leaned back at the supper upon His chest and said, “Lord, who is the one handing You over?” So Peter, seeing him, says to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus says to him, “If I wish him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” So this word went out among the brothers, that this disciple does not die. But Jesus did not say to him that he does not die, but, “If I wish him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”
