Immediately Jesus compelled His disciples to enter the boat and go ahead of Him toward the other side, toward Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd. When evening came, they went down to the sea and set out across it toward Capernaum. After bidding the people farewell, He went up the mountain alone to pray. Darkness had come, and Jesus had not yet joined them. He was alone on the land, while the boat was many stadia away in the middle of the sea, battered by waves. A strong wind blew against them, and they strained at the rowing.
After they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, Jesus came toward them about the fourth watch of the night, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them. They all saw Him drawing near the boat, thought He was an apparition, and cried out in fear. Immediately He spoke: “Take courage! It is I; do not fear.”
Peter answered Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You upon the waters.” He said, “Come.” Peter got down from the boat, walked upon the waters, and came toward Jesus. But seeing the strong wind, he became afraid; beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand, grasped him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
They were willing to receive Him into the boat. When they climbed into the boat, the wind ceased, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. They were utterly astounded, for they had not understood about the loaves, and their heart was hardened. Those in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are God’s Son.”
