Jesus withdrew to the regions of Tyre and Sidon. He entered a house and wanted no one to know, but He could not remain hidden. A Canaanite woman of those territories, Greek and Syrophoenician by birth, heard of Him and came crying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My little daughter is terribly oppressed by a demon.” But He did not answer her a word. His disciples asked, “Dismiss her, because she is crying out behind us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

She came and fell at His feet, bowing before Him: “Lord, help me.” He answered, “Let the children first be satisfied, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, even the little dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Jesus answered, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it happen for you as you wish. Because of this word, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” Her daughter was healed from that hour. Returning home, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.
