When they came to Capernaum, those collecting the didrachma came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the didrachma?” He said, “Yes.” When he entered the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect duties or tribute—from their sons or from outsiders?” When he said, “From outsiders,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. But so that we may not cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. When you open its mouth, you will find a stater. Take it and give it to them for Me and you.”
