Sacrifice You Did Not Desire, but a Body You Prepared

39:1For the end. A psalm of David.

39:2I waited patiently for the Lord;

He attended to me and heard my supplication.

39:3He brought me up from a pit of misery

and from muddy slime;

He set my feet upon a rock

and directed my steps.

39:4He put a new song into my mouth,

a hymn to our God.

Many will see and fear

and hope in the Lord.

39:5Blessed is the man whose hope is the Lord’s name

and who has not looked toward vanities and false frenzies.

39:6Many are the wonders You have done, Lord my God,

and in Your purposes there is no one who can be compared with You.

I announced and spoke;

they multiplied beyond number.

39:7Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,

but ears You prepared for me.

Burnt offering and an offering for sin You did not request.

39:8Then I said, “Look, I have come;

in the scroll of the book it is written concerning me.

39:9I desired to do Your will, my God,

and Your law within my belly.”

39:10I proclaimed good news of righteousness in a great assembly;

look, I will certainly not restrain my lips;

Lord, You know.

39:11I did not hide Your righteousness in my heart;

I spoke of Your truth and Your salvation.

I did not hide Your mercy and Your truth from a great congregation.

39:12But You, Lord, do not put Your compassion far from me;

Your mercy and Your truth have continually sustained me.

39:13For evils without number surrounded me;

my lawless deeds overtook me, and I could not see.

They multiplied beyond the hairs of my head,

and my heart abandoned me.

39:14Be pleased, Lord, to rescue me;

Lord, attend to helping me.

39:15May those seeking my soul to remove it be ashamed and abashed together;

may those desiring evils for me turn backward and be abashed.

39:16Let those saying to me, “Well done! Well done!”

receive their shame immediately.

39:17May all seeking You exult and rejoice in You, Lord;

let those loving Your salvation always say,

“May the Lord be magnified!”

39:18But I am poor and needy;

the Lord will care for me.

You are my helper and defender;

my God, do not delay.
