Wives and Husbands
3:1Likewise, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, so that even if some disobey the word, they may be won without a word through the conduct of their wives,
3:2when they observe your pure conduct in fear.
3:3Let your adornment not be the outward kind—braiding hair, putting on gold ornaments, or dressing in garments—
3:4but the hidden person of the heart, in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious before God.
3:5For this is how the holy women of former times, who hoped in God, also adorned themselves, submitting themselves to their own husbands,
3:6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children if you do good and do not fear any terror.
Likewise, Husbands, Live with Understanding
3:7Likewise, husbands, live with your wives with understanding, as with a weaker vessel, the female, showing them honor as also fellow heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Blessing for Insult
3:8Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, and humble-minded,
3:9not repaying evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but, on the contrary, blessing, because you were called for this, so that you might inherit a blessing.
3:10For “The one who wishes to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
3:11He must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
3:12For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears attend to their petition, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
Suffering for Righteousness
3:13And who will harm you if you become zealous for what is good?
3:14But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear their fear, and do not be troubled,
3:15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you for an account of the hope within you,
3:16yet with gentleness and fear, keeping a good conscience, so that, in the matter in which you are slandered, those who abuse your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.
3:17For it is better, if the will of God should will it, to suffer while doing good than while doing evil.
Christ Suffered Once for Sins
3:18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might bring you to God, being put to death in flesh but made alive in spirit,
3:19in which He also went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,
3:20who were once disobedient, when the patience of God waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few—that is, eight souls—were brought safely through water.
3:21Corresponding to this, baptism now saves you—not a removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
3:22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, with angels and authorities and powers subjected to Him.
