Do Not Be Surprised at the Fiery Trial Among You

Living for the Will of God
4:1Therefore, since Christ suffered in flesh, arm yourselves also with the same thought, because the one who has suffered in flesh has ceased from sin,
4:2so as to live the remaining time in flesh no longer for human desires but for the will of God.
4:3For the time that has passed is enough for doing the will of the Gentiles, having walked in debaucheries, desires, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and lawless idolatries.
4:4They are surprised that you do not run with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they slander you.
4:5They will give an account to the One who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
4:6For this is why the good news was proclaimed even to the dead: so that they might be judged according to human beings in flesh, but live according to God in spirit.
The End of All Things Is Near
4:7But the end of all things has drawn near. Therefore, be sound-minded and sober for prayers.
4:8Above all, maintain earnest love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
4:9Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.
4:10As each has received a gift, use it in serving one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.
4:11If anyone speaks, let it be as oracles of God; if anyone serves, let it be as from strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Sharing the Sufferings of Christ
4:12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for testing, as though something strange were happening to you.
4:13But insofar as you share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that you may also rejoice with exultation at the revelation of His glory.
4:14If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
4:15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evildoer, or as a meddler in others’ affairs.
4:16But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name.
4:17For it is time for judgment to begin from the house of God; and if it begins first from us, what will be the outcome for those who disobey the good news of God?
4:18And “If the righteous one is saved with difficulty, where will the ungodly person and sinner appear?”
4:19Therefore, let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
