The God of All Comfort, Who Comforts Us in Affliction

Greeting

1:1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy the brother, to the Church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints in the whole of Achaia:

1:2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Comfort in Affliction

1:3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

1:4who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those in every affliction through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

1:5For just as the sufferings of Christ abound toward us, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

1:6Now whether we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which works in the endurance of the same sufferings that we also suffer.

1:7And our hope for you is firm, knowing that as you are partners in the sufferings, so also in the comfort.

1:8For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of our affliction that occurred in Asia: we were burdened exceedingly, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of living.

1:9Indeed, we ourselves had within ourselves the sentence of death, so that we might rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.

1:10He delivered us from so great a death and will deliver us; in Him we have set our hope that He will deliver us yet again,

1:11as you too help on our behalf by petition, so that many people may give thanks on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

Sincerity and the Intended Visit

1:12For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience: that in holiness and sincerity from God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.

1:13For we write nothing to you other than what you read or also recognize; and I hope that you will recognize fully to the end,

1:14just as you have also recognized us in part, that we are your boast, just as you also are ours in the day of our Lord Jesus.

1:15And with this confidence I intended to come to you first, so that you might have a second grace,

1:16and to pass through you into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and to be sent onward by you to Judea.

1:17Now when I intended this, did I then act with fickleness? Or do I plan what I plan according to the flesh, so that with me there is both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?

God’s Yes in Christ

1:18But God is faithful: our word to you is not “Yes” and “No.”

1:19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you through us—through me and Silvanus and Timothy—did not become “Yes” and “No,” but in Him “Yes” has come to be.

1:20For however many God’s promises are, in Him is the “Yes.” Therefore also through Him is the “Amen” to God, for glory through us.

1:21Now the One who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,

1:22who also sealed us and gave the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts.

Sparing the Community

1:23But I call God as witness against my soul that it was to spare you that I did not come again to Corinth.

1:24Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers for your joy, for in faith you stand.
