Greeting

1:1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus,

1:2to Timothy, a beloved child: grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving for Timothy’s Faith

1:3I am thankful to God, whom I serve, as my forebears did, with a pure conscience, as I remember you unceasingly in my supplications night and day,

1:4longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy,

1:5having received a reminder of the unhypocritical faith in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that it dwells also in you.

1:6For this reason I remind you to rekindle God’s gift, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

1:7For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and self-discipline.

Not Ashamed of the Testimony

1:8Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me, His prisoner, but share suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,

1:9who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the times of the ages,

1:10but now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who abolished death and brought life and incorruptibility to light through the gospel.

1:11For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.

1:12For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that He is able to guard my deposit for that day.

1:13Hold a pattern of sound words which you heard from me, in faith and love in Christ Jesus.

1:14Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

Onesiphorus

1:15You know this, that all those in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.

1:16May the Lord give mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain,

1:17but when he came to Rome, he earnestly searched for me and found me.

1:18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day. And how much service he gave in Ephesus, you know better.
