A Soldier, an Athlete, and a Farmer

A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus

2:1You, then, my child, be empowered in the grace in Christ Jesus,

2:2and the things you heard from me through many witnesses, entrust these to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.

2:3Share suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

2:4No one serving as a soldier entangles himself in the affairs of ordinary life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him.

2:5And if someone competes as an athlete, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

2:6The laboring farmer must be first to share in the fruits.

2:7Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.

Remember Jesus Christ

2:8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, from David’s seed, according to my gospel,

2:9for which I suffer hardship even to chains as a criminal. But the word of God has not been chained.

2:10For this reason I endure all things for the chosen ones, so that they too may obtain the salvation in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

2:11The saying is faithful: for if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;

2:12if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us;

2:13if we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

A Worker Approved by God

2:14Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to battle over words, which is useful for nothing and leads to the ruin of those who hear.

2:15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker with no cause for shame, cutting a straight course for the word of truth.

2:16But avoid profane empty talk, for they will advance into further ungodliness,

2:17and their word will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

2:18who missed the mark concerning truth, saying that resurrection has already happened, and overturn the faith of some.

2:19Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knew those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.”

Vessels for Honor

2:20Now in a great house there are vessels not only of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.

2:21Therefore if someone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

2:22But flee youthful desires, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.

2:23And reject foolish and uneducated disputes, knowing that they give birth to fights.

2:24But a slave of the Lord must not fight, but must be gentle toward all, able to teach, patient with wrong,

2:25instructing opponents with gentleness, in case God may give them repentance toward the knowledge of truth,

2:26and they may return to sobriety out of the devil’s snare, having been captured by him to do his will.
