Imitators of God

5:1Therefore become imitators of God, as beloved children,

5:2and walk in love, just as Christ also loved us and gave Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a fragrant aroma.

Children of Light

5:3But sexual immorality and every impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints,

5:4nor shamefulness and foolish talk or coarse joking, which are unfitting, but rather thanksgiving.

5:5For know this with certainty: no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

5:6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

5:7Therefore do not become their fellow partakers.

5:8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

5:9for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth,

5:10testing what is pleasing to the Lord.

5:11And do not share in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them,

5:12for it is shameful even to speak of the things done by them in secret.

5:13But all things, when exposed by the light, become visible,

5:14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you.”

Walk Carefully

5:15So watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,

5:16buying up the opportunity, because the days are evil.

5:17For this reason do not become foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

5:18And do not become drunk with wine, in which there is dissipation, but be filled in the Spirit,

5:19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

5:20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father,

Wives and Husbands

5:21submitting to one another in the fear of Christ:

5:22wives, to your own husbands as to the Lord,

5:23because a husband is head of the wife as Christ also is head of the Church, He Himself being Savior of the body.

5:24But as the Church submits to Christ, so also wives to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, Love Your Wives

5:25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church and gave Himself for her,

5:26so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with a word,

5:27so that He Himself might present the Church to Himself glorious, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but so that she should be holy and without blemish.

5:28In this way husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. The one who loves his own wife loves himself.

5:29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the Church,

5:30because we are members of His body.

5:31“For this reason a man will leave father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

5:32This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the Church.

5:33Nevertheless, let each one of you also love his own wife as himself, and let the wife respect her husband.
