Paul Accepted by the Apostles
2:1Then, after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along as well.
2:2I went up in accordance with a revelation, and I set before them the gospel I proclaim among the nations, privately before those held in esteem, lest somehow I was running, or had run, in vain.
2:3But not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.
2:4Yet because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us—
2:5we did not yield to them in submission even for an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.
2:6But from those held to be something—whatever they once were makes no difference to me; God does not favor a person’s outward standing—those held in esteem added nothing to me.
2:7On the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter with that for the circumcised,
2:8for the One who worked through Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised worked also through me for the nations,
2:9and recognizing the grace given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were regarded as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we should go to the nations and they to the circumcised.
2:10Only we were to remember the poor, the very thing I was also eager to do.
Paul Opposes Cephas
2:11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.
2:12For before certain people came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they came, he began drawing back and separating himself, fearing those of the circumcision.
2:13And the remaining Jews joined him in hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.
2:14But when I saw that they were not walking straight in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel the Gentiles to live as Jews?
Justified by Faith
2:15“We are Jews by birth and not sinners from the Gentiles,
2:16yet knowing that a human being is not justified by works of law but through faith in Jesus Christ, we too believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of law, because by works of law no flesh will be justified.
2:17But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were also found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? May it never be!
2:18For if I rebuild the things I tore down, I show myself to be a transgressor.
2:19For through law I died to law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ.
2:20And I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
2:21I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through law, then Christ died for nothing.”
