For Freedom Christ Set Us Free

Stand Firm in Freedom

5:1For freedom Christ set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not be held again under a yoke of slavery.

5:2Look, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will benefit you nothing.

5:3And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is obligated to do the whole law.

5:4You who seek to be justified by law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen from grace.

5:5For we, by the Spirit, through faith, eagerly await the hope of righteousness.

5:6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any strength, but faith working through love.

A Little Leaven

5:7You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?

5:8This persuasion is not from the One who calls you.

5:9A little leaven leavens the whole batch.

5:10I am confident about you in the Lord that you will think nothing else. But the one troubling you will bear the judgment, whoever he may be.

5:11But I, brothers, if I still proclaim circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.

5:12I wish those who unsettle you would even castrate themselves!

Freedom to Serve in Love

5:13For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not make freedom a base of operations for the flesh, but through love serve one another as slaves.

5:14For the whole law is fulfilled in one saying: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

5:15But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Walk by the Spirit

5:16But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will certainly not fulfill the desire of the flesh.

5:17For the flesh desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these oppose one another, so that you do not do the things you want.

5:18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

5:19Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, licentiousness,

5:20idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, divisions, factions,

5:21envies, drunkenness, revelries, and things like these. I tell you beforehand, just as I told you before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Fruit of the Spirit

5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

5:23gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

5:24And those who belong to Christ crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

5:25If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

5:26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
